Repositories

Research data repositories are permanent archives and access points to research data that often provide data publication services with digital object identifiers (DOI). They can be domain-specific (i.e. specialised on a specific scientific domain), institutional (maintained by and open for a specific institution, e.g. a university) or generic. Generic data repositories often provide "self-service" DOIs. In contrast to these, domain repositories are known to publish well documented and reusable data. This is due to a thorough data and metadata curation provided by the repository staff that usually includes domain scientists.
GFZ Data Services is the repository for the Earth Science domain, hosted at GFZ, and provides publication services for research data and scientific software. In addition, they host the sample catalogue and provides a minting service for the IGSN International Generic Sample Number. For seismological data, GEOFON is operating the international GFZ Seismological Data Archive. Geodetic and satellite data are published via the ISDC Information System and Data Center that is jointly operated by GFZ Data providers from the Geodesy and Geophysics Departments and GFZ Data Services.
