Mikroorganismen stehen in Wechselwirkung mit ihrer Umwelt, da sie gelöste Verbindungen produzieren und verbrauchen, die daher in ihrer Umgebung, hauptsächlich im Porenwasser, verarmt oder angereichert werden. Die Analyse der gelösten Verbindungen ist deshalb eine Voraussetzung für das Verständnis der mikrobiellen Aktivität in geologischen Umgebungen. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt unserer Arbeit ist der direkte Nachweis des mikrobiellen Umsatzes durch den Einsatz von Radioisotopen, da diese eine unübertroffene Empfindlichkeit bieten. Da die mikrobielle Abundanz und Aktivität mit zunehmender Tiefe abnimmt, sind Radiotracer oft die einzige Möglichkeit, diese schwachen Spuren des Lebens nachzuweisen.
